Christopher Columbus Statue
Grant Park, Chicago, Illinois, Grant Park 60605 United StatesPrint this page   •   Share this page

Located, appropriately enough, along Columbus Drive in Grant Park, this is one of several statues of Christopher Columbus scattered across Chicago. It features Columbus gesturing toward the sky with one hand, and gripping a scroll (possibly a map?) in the other. The gesture is actually kind of weak, and it looks like he's hailing a cab, rather than pointing to any sort of celestial destiny.

This particular statue was created for the A Century of Progress International Exhibition, also known as the 1933 World's Fair. The statue commissioned by members of the city's Italian community and was unveiled on Italian Day, August 3, 1933.
