Although the Hamilton statue itself was created in 1940 and installed in 1952, the base has changed considerably over the years. In the original 1952 installation the sculpture was almost dwarfed by Samuel A. Marx's 78-foot-tall cantilevered granite exedra. (An earlier proposal by Eliel Saarinen had been rejected.) In 1993, when the exedra was found to have structural problems, it was demolished and replaced by the present simple red granite base, much better proportioned to the actual size of the statue.
