There are two comments.

My grandfather, John Caminati, was a chef here in the 1920's. I'd have to find the picture - buried somewhere - that shows him with - literally - a staff of 30-40. I wish they'd kept a pictoral history of years gone by! Grandfather, from Berceto, Italy - was also a chef at Chicago's Valentino Inn in 1925 - I have a flyer from that one!

As a child, my family moved to Chicago during the latter part of WWII in order for my father to find work which had become scarce for Blacks in Columbus, Georgia. We returned to Georgia for the beginning of my Kindergartren year after the war was over. As a tourist, I revisited the city while in my fifties in 1996 . I was pleasantly surprised that Chicago was a tourist destination. The Roosevelt was our home base as we visited museums, the Navy Pier, The Magnificent mile and other points of interest. My girlfriend and I would stroll around the corner to the Embassy Suites and join the breakfast line for a free treat. Our grandkids were horrified and were afraid we would be arrested!I am so glad to see that the old Roosevelt has been renovated and is now rated five star. I will certainly remember it as long as I live as a place that holds many wonderful memories. I know the residents are a happy, satisfied group.Nathaniel HarrisColumbus, Georgia
