On a street known for high-end shopping, even Chicago regulars were stunned by the opening of a store dedicated to GPS receivers. The previous occupier of the space was Sony, known for producing flashy and innovative electronics. But GPS's are for outdoorsmen and the military, right?

Wrong. And that was the point put across by the design of the store. Just as chic as the Chanel store down the street, Garmin's flagship changed minds about how to sell GPS devices.

Grounded in friendly but luscious hardwoods, accented in glass, the store is bright, airy, and welcoming. Embracing the organic further, the walls undulate and the irregular spaces at floor level are filled with whitewashed stones. The result is half way between Ikea and Apple Store.
