One of Chicago's most centrally located monuments is also one of its least seen. The city's Eternal Flame keeps a low-profile, both literally and figuratively, even though it is right on Daley Plaza. It seems that more pigeons than people know about it, as thousands of pedestrians rush by while our winged friends huddle nearby for warmth. The monument is a single flame burning natural gas that is surrounded by a bronze plate (discolored from the flame). It is dedicated to all those who served, and especially those who died, in the armed forces of the United States.

» The flame was lit on August 22, 1972 by Albina Nance, who was then president of the Illinois Gold Star Mothers -- an organization of the mothers of fallen service members.

I was born and raised and even came home to Illinois after serving Honorably in the United States Marine Corps 1997-2001 Active Duty. I never knew about this monument until this very moment.... The City of Chicago really should do more to promote it and make it more noticeable.... but nonetheless it's still a very touching tribute to my fellow Armed Services members, past and present. Semper Fidelis from Elgin, Illinois. Let's bring Our Troops home safe and NOT forget about them once they've touched back on American Soil. Make it known to your State Government Officials that you support increasing the VA Healthcare Budget (as we all know they are so under-funded as it is)... we need to take care of all of our troops that served our great country. SUPPORT OUR FALLEN, OUR TROOPS, and OUR VETERANS AMERICA!!!!! May God Bless America!
