For years, people working in this building suffered with an identity complex. It's was named afer its location -- 65 East South Water Street. That caused a number of problems for everyone from couriers to suburbanites trying to send letters. Eventually, the name of part of East South Water was changed to East Wacker -- slightly less confusing until people learn to adopt the new name. The problem is, that people haven't adopted the new name, and as recently as January of 2005 the building was still painted with the address "65 East South Water."

Address snafus aside, the building serves its purpose. It is an architectural cog in the machinery of Chicago's urban core. Not particularly noteworthy in stature, and even though it has art deco dating and inspiration, the execution is a little weak. It's even too light to be called art moderne. Still, without this structure in place, there would be an obvious gap in this corner of the Loop.
