Like the city's other great museum, the Field Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago is housed in a building whose majesty is only surpassed by the depth of the collection inside. Columns, arches, and a grand staircase make sure visitors know this is an important building. Those who don't know will be eaten by the lion statues guarding the entrance. This grand building was erected for the World's Columbian Exposition, which did more to shape Chicago's architectural destiny than Donald Trump ever will. It has undergone no fewer than 12 additions, renovations, and restorations to make it what it is today.

Your Thoughts

There is one comment.

Born and raised in Chicago, I attended the Art Institute as a young boy and as a student in later years. The smells of paint and clay, the masterworks, the many hours spent amongst the Van Goghs, the Monet exhibit. It is one of my cherished memories of years now gone.
